The borough takes its name from the rope-drawn ferry that crossed the Hackensack River from 1659 until 1826. Little Ferry incorporated in 1894.

History & Community
Little Ferry's Hackensack River location shaped its history from the colonial ferry crossing through brickmaking, transportation and later industrial development. Washington's troops used the ferry route while retreating from advancing British forces in November 1776.
